Songs submitted for the contest were panel-evaluated on a number of criteria, including lyrical content. According to Matt Olsen, who works in Artist Relations for We Are Listening, the "judges were impressed and awarded" No Phear "with a runner up final status".

"Zion's Gate", which is a popular chart-climbing single for the reggae/hip hop artist, has accumulated numerous additional accolades. The talented reggae/hip hop musician from Jamaica has released his anticipated sophomore album, a move which will thrill his fans around the world.

No Phear recently released his new album, marking a huge stage in the career of the versatile reggae/hip hop singer-songwriter. Peter Fraize's latest album is called "Organic Matter" and is an album that features a tight knit cast of players (Hammond organist, a guitarist, and a drummer) all playing with Fraize and his saxophone, on his original compositions that are of a wide variety of Jazz songs. "Soloman's House of Freaks" is an almost toe-tapping blues shuffle, in which the drums, organ, and guitar hold down the beat while the saxophone does the singing. "Brain's" is a unique jazzy number, with talented musical timing, that portrays a very modern take on using soulful sounds. "Fish (This Big)" is a song that incorporates a little bit of the jam-band sounds, in a song that is both jazz and rock like and really packs a punch. Overall, this is a distinctive album with its primary use of the Hammond organ as well as the saxophone to create songs that are an amalgam of both past and modern Jazz. The electro-ambient creations of "Rhapsody of Enchanted Lands" by Akuna Art are among the few out there that can bring two genres, electronic and ambient, together extremely well. One can sit back and relax at home and let the melodies of the tracks soothe you or bob your head while driving on a nice sunny day. The rhythm and melody work so perfectly; making this a unique, enjoyable album. The very last track "5 O'Clock AM" is beautiful soundscape with trumpets, synthesizers, and other more modern effects that will take the listener into another world. "Philosophy In the Bedroom" utilizes the cool tempo of tribal drums with synthetic effects which definitely give the album a unique tone overall. Miho Saigo's debut CD, "The Wind Gave Me This Story," is a captivating work of Eastern tones and contemporary melodies, expressed in the rich vernacular of a Mongolian 2-stringed instrument called a morin khuur. Similar in sound and size to a cello (although slightly smaller with a more box-like body), the morin khuur produces a varied sound, much dependent on the performer's unique artistry, which, in Saigo's case, is considerable. Accompanied mainly by spare and nuanced piano, the 7 instrumental pieces on "The Wind Gave Me This Story" evoke the wild plains of Mongolia with deep and inspired reverie. A plaintive melody infuses CD-opener, "A Song of Wind and Sky," a song of wonderment for nature's bounty, while Saigo effectively plays with rhythm on the visually evocative, "A White Horse in Suho." While the beautiful "The Kite" is less buoyant than one might infer, its pastoral melody is like a kite's tail gliding across an open sky with infinite grace. Equal parts Asian World music and New Age soundscapes, Miho Saigo's "The Wind Gave Me This Story" CD is an engaging and spiritual album for listeners with imagination as profound as wind.

In "Worship" we hear Munro's skills upon the acoustic guitar in a down tempo song that is calming and introspective. "The Journey" is a song in which a cool and interesting percussive lead is followed by both bluesy and funky guitar playing, in a fun-loving and celebratory musical number. The spiritual classic, "Amazing Grace," Munro incorporates some cool subtle psychedelic sounds in the background as he plays an emotive version of the song on his guitar. This is an album that might best be described as contemporary instrumental/inspirational music. It's heartfelt and you can hear how much the musician values his spirituality. With a style that's been referred to as Psych / Folk Rock (but perhaps more closely approximated mid-'70's, NY-centric Punk / New Wave 'artistes', such as Patti Smith, Richard Hell or Lou Reed), Lucas reached legendary status with 2 albums that now command hefty collector's prices for their rarity and uniqueness. His new CD, "Millennial Sequence: Jailbreak!" - while more expansive than his earlier albums (3 songs clock in at over 6 minutes in length), bears the same trademark idiosyncratic – but completely accessible, piano-based pop-rock songs. This album is one in which Baumgartner has embraced the musical world using the aid of a computer and this is no easy feat to accomplish as each song is well produced and well balanced with high quality sound textures. This album is perfect for those who already enjoy Bach, as it is a refreshing new look at Baroque music but isn't a break away from what makes the music so powerfully special to begin with.

The accomplished folk singer, Anne Price, returns with her 4th CD, "A Few More Miles to Go," yet another wonderful collection of (mainly) traditional – if lesser exposed, potent folk songs. Opening with a cover of the late, under-appreciated contemporary folk stylist, Kate Wolf (an influence on Nanci Griffith), "The Trumpet Vine" serves as a terrific introduction for a varied set that reveals folk music's rich and evolving traditions. As a veteran and leading exponent of NYC's storied folk heritage, Price's mastery of the music's many styles is unquestioned. As such, her take on the mountain ballad-like "Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key," a Woodie Guthrie tune originating from the seminal 1998 album by Billy Bragg & Wilco ("Mermaid Avenue") is true and affecting, as is her a cappella rendition of the English ballad, "The Keys of Canterbury." Elsewhere, Price's mid-range voice (not unlike Griffith's instrument these days) is the perfect vehicle for songs of homespun humor such as "Chocolate," children's sing-alongs songs like "Yucky Bugs," or praises to nature's wonder with "Black Waters." But nowhere is the singer better represented than on her Iris DeMent-like rendition of the playful Janis Ian tune, "My Autobiography." Without a doubt, Anne Price's excellent CD, "A Few More Miles to Go," is a fine addition to the American folk music library; the pairing of a revered songbook with a treasured performer.

The Bards of Balance have a different goal than most artists out there and their music proves to be quite interesting. Their album, "Restoring Balance" is a collection of Folk/Pop music written by the band leader Kirk Sinclair to coincide with his book "Systems out of Balance." The music obviously has a lot to say, seeing as it's taken from the 564 page epic from Sinclair. The feeling of the album is some mix of acoustic Dan Fogelberg music mixed with The Schoolhouse Rock sound. The track "Middle Class Harmony" is a good example of this combination. They try to change their style a bit from song to song as you can hear on, "I'm Working," which has steel drums giving it a tropical island feel. The simplicity of a trio brings a new light to classic holiday tunes when the group, Trio West, presents their latest outstanding album "Trio West Plays Holiday Songs, Vol. 2." A stand-up bass, drum kit, and piano bring a Latin/Jazz flavor to the songs we've heard all our lives during the holidays. You may hardly recognize tracks like "Silent Night Samba" as it has an upbeat flavor with spectacular piano progressions. Some may be more easily deciphered like their rendition of "Jingle Bells" with a crisp and bright piano that glides effortlessly across the keys. The whole album moves at a steady pace and if you like one track, you have to like them all. "I Stand Alone" by up and coming Reggae/Dancehall artist No Phear is very fitting for the modern, more urban turn that both the Reggae and Dancehall genres are making these days. This album makes use of fresh Hip-Hop beats while the artist raps in his native Jamaican dialect or patois. The deep and slow track "Mama Love" is inspired by the artist's mother and while it is very emotional, it sticks to the solid beats. "Da Wah Dah" is a very danceable dancehall track featuring artists Marlon and Pink Bling that will make the listener want to play it over and over again because of its catchy hook. "Eyez On Me" is another dancehall tune, reminiscent of Sean Paul, that makes an innovative use of voice machine effects over a progressive beat; it's impossible to not move at least one part of your body when this track on. The Reggae and Dancehall styles are transforming and this album is a prime, well-done example of that. Warning! This album contains Explicit Content.

Mark Sylvester's latest CD is titled "New Music for Banjo." It is an album built around Mark's skillful banjo playing, featuring both a bluegrass and classical sensibility. CD-opener, "Trio #1, movement 1," is a beautifully gentle and warm composition comprised of the banjo, oboe and cello. On "Cascade," however, Mark shows off his finger-picking skills in a solo piece for him and his prized banjo. Then there is "Pulse (in 7)," a complex and introspective piece in which Mark's banjo takes a slight backseat to the fevered interplay of a string quartet. This album is a well-crafted crossroads for contemporary, classical and folksy banjo playing. Female Japanese pop singer krystalcube's debut CD, "Opening," is a very positive and energized pop album. The vocals are fluttery and calming, and completely satisfying. A mix of J-pop, 80's influences and R&B really makes this a fun album with more than a few surprises. She even includes a Japanese version of "unconditional Love," plus Instrumental versions of each track. If you could only get one track from this album, I suggest the title track, "Opening." If you're looking for some cute, poppy music from Japan, then kyrstalcube's CD "Opening" is a great place to start.

The new album, "Blue Eyed Son" by the talented Blueyed Son is an uplifting, powerful Pop album. This album plays like a series of anthems, with vocals crooning over either an acoustic guitar or keyboard. Many of the songs swell between quiet and loud, giving an emotional feeling to the album. With the strength of a Kings of Leon song, the track "Long Way Off" is a particularly powerful song with strong and emotional vocals and lyrics. Plunky & Oneness struck gold with their CD release, "Plunky & Oneness 2012 Collectors' Box Set." This is a greatest hits compilation that takes cuts off their 12 full albums recorded between 1988 and 2008. The smartest move was putting the compilations onto 5 separate CDs, each genre-specific. The first half of the compilation is a lot more groovy and relaxed. For instance, "Forever In A Moment" (from the 'Love Songs' CD) is a great mood-setter with good, slow rhythms and expert saxophone. But my favorite part of the box-set has to be the 4th CD,'P Phunk.' These tracks have a lot of flavor, and vocals with feeling. "Got To Move Something" is an especially good example of the funky beats Plunky has to offer. Having this collector's CD box set is like having a well-oiled machine helping you pick the perfect mood. Whether you want urban groove, cool jazz, love songs, hard-core funk, or Afro world, Plunky & Oneness are here to help with "Plunky & Onesness 2012 Collectors' Box Set."

"Salt of the Earth," Mobetta Loretta's latest CD, would be best described as a modern folk album with a dash of southern rock. Yet it is much more than that because it is such an ambitious and creative work; it was recorded as a concept album with all the songs being inspired by the 1954 album also titled "Salt Of The Earth." In "Copper Pit Miner," Mobetta sings to us about being a copper miner in an upbeat, danceable folk-blues song that features great harmonica. "I Am the Salt of the Earth" is a song in which Mobetta opts to croon to us over a pleasant combination of acoustic guitar and string section. For "Local 809" she sings about antiquated union life over a more modern and toe-tapping blues beat. The songs on this album stand up on their own, as they are great contemporary expressions of a past generation; yet when one factors in that each song is part of an overall theme it really adds substance. So check out Mobetta Loretta's CD, "Salt of the Earth," if you want to hear great folksy blues stories of a day gone by.

heartscore has released his next album "touch me"

Many popular musicians have never studied music and composing. They are just playing, what they hear inside and of course the musical world has got great results from them. Here comes one artist ,who has full command of all classical theory and who creates a fertile combination of the popular and the classical approach.
heartscore is the pseudonym for the man behind this studio-project and the new album of heartscore called "Touch me", shows, that a classical background is not a handicap to rock as hell.
Founder and mastermind Dirk Radloff was born in Frankfurt/Germany started to play violin at the age of 5. Later he explored also piano, viola and not to forget electric guitar and bass. After he had finished his violin-studies at the music academy in Frankfurt ,he joined several local bands, but he became more and more frustrated by them. In an interview with Sergio Vilar he complains: " Years ago I took part in a countless number of local bands, so I played live very often. That didn't really satisfy me. My bandmates were either completely unprofessional and turned up stoned at rehearsals two hours late or they were just not prepared properly. Things didn't develop and you just carried your amplifiers from one youthclub to another. So I decided to work on my own 5 years ago."
In 2000 he founded the studio-project "heartscore", which set mostly american poems to music in the manner of an intellectual and progressive Rock-style. With "heartscore" Dirk could realise to arrange and write scores, which had to be played by himself and the other musicians. He could also melt together influences ranging from Led Zeppelin and Yes to modern Jazz and classical music. As a critic wondered: "Who can put this together?". Heartscore could and during the next years the project published three albums, which catched the attention and many compliments from critics. Heartscore featured some very talented musicians like Tim Warweg and Stefan Platte. Almost all recordings and the production was done by Dirk Radloff himself, just the Mastering was given to the talented ears and hands of Ole Kießling at Tonstudio Kießling.
In 2002 heartscore released "Structures", which was named "one cool album" by "Progressiveworld" and it showed Dirk and his classmate Oliver creating a well constructed Hardrock with strong melodies.
In 2004 heartscore hired Session-drummer Tim Warweg and piano-player Stefan Platte to realise the very ambitious work "Straight to the brain". Here the music was influenced by the inner structure of poems resulting in really spectacular and unusual songs. Critics especially acclaimed the use of choirs, which were compared to Yes and Queen, and the creative arrangements.
In 2007 "many directions" surprised the world with some more commercial songs, still basing on composed progressive rock, but now appearing as straight rockers and disco-funk. But the album also include one of the most progressive tracks of heartscore with a full orchestra: "The miller's wife"
Now in 2009 heartscore presents the actual "Touch me", which marks a turn around in the style of heartscore. But let Dirk explain it himself: "Inspired by the relationship to my pretty wife I started two years ago to collect little melodies on my cellphone. You have to imagine: Sometimes I stopped in the middle of a street, switched on the recorder, and sung something, while people around me wondered, what I am doing. Fourteen of these little recordings became basic motifs of "Touch me". During the process of composing I realised, that the new material would not fit to poems, because the songs were much more easy than anything, what I had written before. So I stepped away from the poems, the choirs, the long songs and the progressive style, though there are still progressive elements left. For the first time I use synths and programmed techno-patterns, which are transforming my sound to become more modern and more suitable for more people. All songs were written as full scores using my notation software 'Sibelius' before I thought about how to record everything. I hired again Tim Warweg for the drums to get a natural groove, which nobody can copy with programming. The drum-set was recorded in my bedroom with just two mics. We used very old drums by the manufacturer 'Asba'. The drums are made of steel, a material, which was also preferred by John Bonham . Tim was well prepared and we recorded all fourteen songs in just one day directly to 'garageband'. Basing on the drum-tracks I added the other instruments and the voice step by step."
From the first second "Touch me" surprises with the use of synthesizers, which were never used before on a heartscore-album. The synths are clever arranged with the guitar and the combination gives "Touch me" its special athmosphere somewhere between the old Rock 'n Roll and the young Club. Looking on the first track " I did it" with its mixture of delicate rhythms and straight-forward headbanging sections you can hear influences from slayer to to modern Jazz and you will feel activated to move and the same time to think over the arrangement and meaning of the song. The second track features the wonderful ballad "You are so beautiful" driven by the admiring voice of Dirk, the natural acoustic guitar and the powerful but controlled drumming of Tim.
The third tune "Happiness" kicks the ear from a totally different side: With its four-to-the-floor rhythm and funky bass playing the song looks directly to the dancefloor.
All lyrics are reflecting the bright sides of love, seldomly the problematic sides, and supporting a very smiling and happy mood for any listener.
If you are listening to "Touch me" your ears will melt away, your eyes will blink, your mouth will become hungry and your fingers will long to touch the handcrafted felt-cover, petting in a tender way the whole day over and over it as long as you hear the entire album.
Since 2000 heartscore is combining the tradition of Rock with the skills and knowledge of classical composers. heartscore is believing in handmade music, melodies and quality.

"Number Theory" by Richard Potter (Classic Rock Artist from North Carolina(NC))

Demonstrating a real mastery of his '50's and '60's influences, Richard Potter's latest CD, "Number Theory," is a thoroughly satisfying pop-rock hybrid album that succeeds on all levels. From echoes of '60's-era Neil Diamond (CD-opener, "Tell the Angels I Love You") to American Grafitti-era rock'n'roll ("Love is Blind") to the wonderfully Pulp Fiction-esque feel of the title track (featuring a terrific Herb Albert-inspired trumpet lead), Potter's solid sense of melody and pop dramatics gives his new 10-song collection a real cinematic flair. Elsewhere, "So Long" is a tuneful ballad blending Music Hall-style banjo strumming with the melancholy strains of cello, while "AM Radio (Everything I Need To Know)" is a driving rocker that's as convincing as the singer-songwriter's lighter, more pop-oriented songs. With an abundance of captivating melodies, interesting arrangements and solid performances, "Number Theory" is a terrific CD that showcases Richard Potter's original and contemporary musical vision to best effect.

"Fun Out of Life" by April Hall (Jazz Artist from Boston, Massachusetts(MA))

"Fun Out of Life" is the most recent release from the fabulous and highly talented Jazz vocalist, April Hall. Hall's voice has the ability to not only be in constant key but also adds considerable spice to each variety of Jazz song she attempts; which range from soulful ballads, to bluesy renditions, to high energy pieces. In "Crazy He Calls Me," April interacts with some well played Jazz piano and just a dash of drums to deliver a mellow tune that shows off how her voice can be warm and inviting. Another song, "Boogie Woogie Blues (I May Be Wrong)" Hall gets a little groovier with a toe tapping, more Bluesy beat accompanied by a dynamic singing style. Then the song, "The Face I Love" we find a more traditional Jazz piece that features a fluttering flute line that subtlety jumps around Hall's velvety vocals. "Empty Swings" by Jeff Callahan (Spoken Word/Jazz Artist from New Jersey(NJ))

Bringing poetry to life, "Empty Swings," creatively composed by Jeff Callahan brilliantly blends spoken word with Jazz Fusion. Each track features Callahan verbalizing life and nature with a voice that is soft and gentle. Callahan paints pictures with lyrics like "...wildly rummaging through button-down clouds and in pot bellied raindrops smothering the haunted beating of your nightstand clock" on the track "Sweet Dreams Earth." "Bewitched" by Raquy and the Cavemen (World Artist from New York(NY))

Raquy Danzinger has traveled the world and brought back with her the knowledge and skill to compose music with Middle Eastern and Egyptian tonality. "Bewitched," the latest release from Raquy and the Cavemen is a brilliant collection of these cultures and is filled with well crafted songs. This album features Dumbek (Arabic hand drum) and the Iranian Kamanche (an instrument comparable to the violin) creating traditional Middle Eastern music. The tone is very intense throughout the entire album. The Kamanche wails hauntingly over beaten drums on tracks like "Axarai" and the title track "Bewitched." Tracks such as "Metal" feature some virtuoso style drum rhythms and should not be missed. While this is sure to be a great live show, don't miss an opportunity to listen to "Bewitched" as it is an album well worth hearing as well.

"The Dream of 'I'" by Doug Wyatt (Instrumental Rock/Ambient Artist from San Francisco, California(CA))

Doug Wyatt's release, "The Dream of 'I'" is an amalgam of songs that take on different genres all seen through the eyes of an experienced electronic artist. The album is well recorded and produced, as it needs to be due to the large amounts of ambient and psychedelic sounds that Wyatt uses within his tunes. He has mastered the art of computer-aided music, and this is plainly heard throughout this entire album. On the track, "Thrill of the Chase" we get a toe-tapping beat underneath a spacey yet uplifting piano piece. Then on "Talking Points" one is presented with grittier, more industrial sounds over a thick, driving electric beat. These songs are then juxtaposed with others like "Artifacts and Fantasies" which contain numerous intricate psychedelic sounds, and are devoid of a traditional beat structure altogether. If your ears would appreciate a plethora of electronic instruments and sounds masterly interwoven, or you consider yourself an audiophile and just appreciate diverse sounds, then "The Dream of 'I'" is something you'll want to take in.

Fans of Zan Zone may not be used to a mellow, acoustic album but that is exactly what his latest CD "Time & Materials" is. Zan Burnham takes his composing skills to a new level as his voice is strong and sincere and it shows on these well balanced acoustic songs. The acoustic guitar is played with extreme skill and is something to be admired. "September Rain" shows the kind of passion and emotion that can be put into a song. His use of banjo and other country instruments in "The Camping Song" gives the song a wonderful happy-go-lucky feeling. Each song on "Time & Materials" has something different to offer, an emotion, a catchy riff, or a haunting lyric. This is a strong album that is for music lovers and musicians alike and proves to be rootsy, melodic, and quite interesting.

"Bucks County" by Paul Marturano (Pop Artist from Pennsylvania(PA))

"Bucks County" by Paul Marturano is a peppy mix of piano and guitar that can appeal to many listeners. Marturano writes piano compositions that take influences from story singers like Billy Joel, Elton John, and John Mellencamp and also delivers a soul coming out of the late 70's. Marturano's vocals are polished and project expression on each and every melodic song. His crisp and clean piano work is highlighted on the track "One And A Half Years Old." His crafty songwriting is best represented by "The Man," an upbeat tune with a bouncy piano line and a crunching guitar on rhythm. Every track has its own separate feeling and charm. "Bucks County" takes the roads well traveled by piano driven Pop/Rock and comes out with an album well worth hearing.

"Beatlesque Too" by Alan Bernhoft (60"s Rock Artist from Los Angeles, California(CA))

Alan Bernhoft more than accomplished his intended goal with his recent album, "Beatlesque Too." The British Invasion sound from the early sixties made popular by The Beatles is alive and well on this album. Bernhoft captures the twangy guitars, the easy flowing harmonies, and simple drum beats with ease. The bouncy song, "All of the Time" features a solid harmonica solo while vocals and harmonies are exceptional. The last track "Come On Baby" is an obvious call to "Twist and Shout," the popular Beatles cover. The average track is not long in length but these songs don't lose the nostalgic throwback of this era. This album doesn't take liberties, risks, or get too adventurous as it simply produces quality song after quality song that could have come straight out of 1964. Fans of The Beatles don't miss an opportunity to hear the excellent songs of "Beatlesque Too."

"Grandma Mary's Latin Rock" by Mary Ho (Latin/Blues Artist from Singapore)

"Grandma Mary's Latin Rock," from the 71-year-old Mary Ho, is a release filled mostly with calm and mellow renditions of popular songs. The background instrumentation is relatively simple throughout the album, yet it is professional and not overbearing. This is because the focus of this instrumental album, is on Mary's articulate and skilled guitar playing. On "Black Magic Woman" we really get a sense of Mary's bluesy side as she plays with soul and gusto. On "Apache" we are presented with a quasi-soothing western song in which she lets her guitar sing out in a lovely fashion. On the final track, "Canon Rock," Grandma Mary rips out some hot rock lead guitar riffs! This album is filled with numerous genres and sounds; it is for the most part a tranquil album, with some rockers mixed in as well. You will appreciate this album if you want to be inspired by an album that demonstrates that a love for music is a lifelong passion.

Paul Alexander's beautiful album "Gone Too Soon" almost begs you to have a glass of wine and stare out your back window while the album spins in the background. His voice is intriguing and calming, and his emotive lyrics are well worth listening to. The accompaniments on this album have a smooth jazz and warm, cozy pop feel. A familiar cover "I Hope You Dance" plays early in the album, enticing the listener into the soft and gentle ambiance Alexander delivers with his sweet and tender voice. Later, "Mama a Rainbow" offers some crisp and clean jazz piano that complements the hopeful and sincere lyrics. "Gone Too Soon" highlights Paul Alexander's vision and voice and will be enjoyed by lovers of easy listening Pop and big band music alike.

"Jean Sibelius - Compositions for Piano" by Heidi Saario (Classical Artist from Ontario, Canada)

Heidi Saario has put together a fine group of pieces written by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius in this wonderful collection of Classical Works, "Jean Sibelius - Compositions for Piano." Her playing on this CD is very emotional and is clearly the work of an accomplished pianist. The emotion is brought into these performances in part, by the effective use of dynamics. "Two Rondinos, Op. 68: I and II" are great examples of the feeling put into these works. They have power drawn from the romantic era but the structured beauty of the Classical. Heidi Saario's "Jean Sibelius - Compositions for Piano" is full of beauty and feeling that shines through in this recording.
